The Croatian sanitary towel and diaper market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Sanitary towel and diaper consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 30%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers were exported from Croatia; which is down by -5.7% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 128%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for sanitary towel and diaper exports from Croatia, accounting for a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, sanitary towel and diaper exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovenia amounted to +40.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+220.6% per year) and Italy (+40.4% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers exports from Croatia, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovenia amounted to +34.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+228.1% per year) and the UK (+61.5% per year).

The average sanitary towel and diaper export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+38.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Croatia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers decreased by -1.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper imports expanded to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 8.1%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sanitary towel and diaper to Croatia, accounting for a 32% share of total imports. Moreover, sanitary towel and diaper imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+19.3% per year) and Italy (+8.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest sanitary towel and diaper suppliers to Croatia were Poland ($X), Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 52% of total imports.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a CAGR of +23.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average sanitary towel and diaper import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
