In 2021, overseas purchases of sausages and similar products of meat decreased by -0.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 272%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sausage imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest sausage supplier to Croatia, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, sausage imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovenia (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy stood at +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovenia (+6.2% per year) and Germany (+11.2% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X), Slovenia ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest sausage suppliers to Croatia, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Spain, which together accounted for a further 20%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +24.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
