Shelled Hazelnut Market Size in Croatia

The Croatian shelled hazelnut market declined to $X in 2021, which is down by -10.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine years. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Croatia

In 2021, approx. X tons of shelled hazelnuts were exported from Croatia; rising by 32% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 251%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 396%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Serbia (X tons) were the main destinations of shelled hazelnut exports from Croatia, together accounting for 82% of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which together accounted for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +46.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovenia ($X), Serbia ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for shelled hazelnut exported from Croatia worldwide, with a combined 76% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +34.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average shelled hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 35% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 41% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Croatia

In 2021, the amount of shelled hazelnuts imported into Croatia totaled X tons, with an increase of 12% on 2020. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Georgia (X tons) were the main suppliers of shelled hazelnut imports to Croatia, with a combined 94% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Slovenia and Spain, which together accounted for a further 3.4%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +468.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and Georgia ($X) constituted the largest shelled hazelnut suppliers to Croatia, together comprising 93% of total imports. These countries were followed by Slovenia and Spain, which together accounted for a further 3.7%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +402.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Slovenia ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) and Georgia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
