The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, skim milk exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) was the main destination for skim milk exports from Croatia, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, skim milk exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, North Macedonia (X tons), twofold. Serbia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: North Macedonia (-0.4% per year) and Serbia (+20.8% per year).

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) remains the key foreign market for skim milk exports from Croatia, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by North Macedonia ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Serbia, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to -3.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: North Macedonia (-3.9% per year) and Serbia (+17.2% per year).

Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Montenegro (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, approx. X tons of skim milk were imported into Croatia; with a decrease of -21.1% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 330%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) were the main suppliers of skim milk imports to Croatia, with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Slovenia, the Netherlands, Poland, France and Germany, which together accounted for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +197.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hungary ($X) constituted the largest supplier of skim milk to Croatia, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
