Sugar Market Size in Croatia

The Croatian sugar market rose sharply to $X in 2021, picking up by 7.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Sugar consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Sugar Production in Croatia

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for sugar exports from Croatia, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, sugar exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Greece (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy stood at +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (-8.4% per year) and Greece (-7.7% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for sugar exports from Croatia, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovenia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Greece, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy totaled -3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (-13.7% per year) and Greece (-13.8% per year).

In 2021, the average sugar export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 20%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Slovenia stood at +204.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Serbia (+43.2% per year) and Austria (+26.1% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sugar to Croatia, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Serbia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Slovenia totaled +157.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Serbia (+36.2% per year) and Austria (+17.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average sugar import price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cuba (+26.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
