In 2021, the Croatian preserved tuna market decreased by -2.2% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In 2021, approx. X tons of tuna (prepared or preserved) were exported from Croatia; with an increase of 40% on 2020 figures. In general, exports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 99%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved tuna exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Ukraine (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved tuna exports from Croatia, with a combined 62% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +206.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia

In 2021, preserved tuna imports into Croatia was estimated at X tons, growing by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest preserved tuna supplier to Croatia, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved tuna imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy amounted to +19.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+27.6% per year) and Germany (+15.2% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tuna (prepared or preserved) to Croatia, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy totaled +17.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+25.5% per year) and Germany (+13.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average preserved tuna import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
