Wallpaper Market Size in Croatia
In 2021, the Croatian wallpaper market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Croatia
In 2021, approx. X tons of wallpaper and wall coverings were exported from Croatia; shrinking by -53.4% against the year before. In general, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 217% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wallpaper exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 181% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) was the main destination for wallpaper exports from Croatia, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, wallpaper exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X kg), sixfold. Serbia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina totaled +14.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+113.8% per year) and Serbia (+7.6% per year).
In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) remains the key foreign market for wallpaper and wall coverings exports from Croatia, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Serbia, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to +20.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+106.2% per year) and Serbia (+15.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wallpaper export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.5% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wallpaper export price increased by +107.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+55.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Wallpaper Imports
Imports into Croatia
In 2021, approx. X tons of wallpaper and wall coverings were imported into Croatia; which is down by -14.7% on 2020 figures. In general, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 29%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wallpaper imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of wallpaper imports to Croatia, with a combined 60% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Hungary, China, Italy, Portugal, Poland, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +61.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wallpaper suppliers to Croatia were Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and Slovenia ($X), together accounting for 58% of total imports. Italy, Hungary, China, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +140.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average wallpaper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 26% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+49.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
