The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 41%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Serbia (X tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) and Montenegro (X tons) were the main destinations of whole fresh milk exports from Croatia, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Slovenia, North Macedonia, Italy and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +250.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for whole fresh milk exported from Croatia were Serbia ($X), Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) and Montenegro ($X), together comprising 73% of total exports. Slovenia, North Macedonia, Senegal and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Senegal (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia

In 2022, imports of whole fresh milk into Croatia expanded notably to X tons, picking up by 11% against the year before. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +15.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 84%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 99%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Hungary (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of whole fresh milk imports to Croatia, with a combined 93% share of total imports. Slovakia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.6%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +75.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hungary ($X), Slovenia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest whole fresh milk suppliers to Croatia, with a combined 91% share of total imports. Slovakia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.8%.

Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Austria ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
