In 2021, the Croatian wine market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Wine consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of wine was finally on the rise to reach X litres after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wine exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X litres) was the main destination for wine exports from Croatia, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, wine exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Czech Republic (X litres), with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina stood at +4.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-5.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (-21.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for wine exported from Croatia were Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), Germany ($X) and the United States ($X), together comprising 59% of total exports. These countries were followed by Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Austria, the UK, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 23%.

Among the main countries of destination, Sweden, with a CAGR of +34.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average wine export price amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 12% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wine export price increased by +41.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 60%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of wine increased by 10% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +14.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X litres in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, North Macedonia (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of wine to Croatia, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, wine imports from North Macedonia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kosovo (X litres), threefold. Italy (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from North Macedonia amounted to +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kosovo (+12.8% per year) and Italy (+26.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest wine suppliers to Croatia were North Macedonia ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Slovenia, Serbia and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 25%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Hungary, with a CAGR of +38.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wine import price amounted to $X per litre, rising by 19% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 22%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
