After two years of decline, the Croatian worked slate market increased by 7.3% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. Worked slate consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, worked slate exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 7,795%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) was the main destination for worked slate exports from Croatia, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, worked slate exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), twofold.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of worked slate was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 41%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of worked slate to Croatia, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, worked slate imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy totaled +44.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (-14.8% per year) and Germany (+21.8% per year).

Based on 2022 figures, worked slate import price increased by +67.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 30%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
