For the third year in a row, Cuba recorded growth in purchases abroad of borates, peroxoborates (perborates), which increased by 8.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 348% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, borates and perborates imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 200%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of borates and perborates to Cuba, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, borates and perborates imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (X tons), more than tenfold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +27.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+2.8% per year) and Mexico (-21.1% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of borates, peroxoborates (perborates) to Cuba, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands stood at +15.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-21.0% per year) and Mexico (-10.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average borates and perborates import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 19%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+26.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
