In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Cuban motorcycle, scooter and side-car market, when its value decreased by -19.5% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars exported from Cuba surged to X units, increasing by 150% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 244%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Panama (X units), El Salvador (X units) and Spain (X units) were the main destinations of motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports from Cuba, with a combined 50% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for El Salvador (with a CAGR of +4.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Panama ($X) remains the key foreign market for motorcycles, scooters and side-cars exports from Cuba, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Panama totaled +9.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-15.2% per year) and El Salvador (+2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average motorcycle, scooter and side-car export price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 125%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to El Salvador ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Panama (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Cuba

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars decreased by -0.3% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 139%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 93% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest motorcycle, scooter and side-car supplier to Cuba, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, motorcycle, scooter and side-car imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Panama (X units), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +11.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Panama (+20.2% per year) and the Czech Republic (-46.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Panama ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest motorcycle, scooter and side-car suppliers to Cuba, together comprising 49% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Panama, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average motorcycle, scooter and side-car import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -33.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 77%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
