Sugar Cane Market Size in Cuba

The Cuban sugar cane market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight decline. Cuba consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of sugar cane in Cuba declined to X tons per ha in 2021, flattening at the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 9.2%. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, Myanmar (X tons) was the largest exporter of sugar cane, creating 42% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 48% share of total exports. Cambodia (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and China (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Myanmar increased at an average annual rate of +100.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+213.5%), Vietnam (+25.7%), Cambodia (+19.8%), Mexico (+12.3%) and Egypt (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +213.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.8%) and China (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Myanmar, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Vietnam and Cambodia increased by +41, +7.9, +7.4 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), Myanmar ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 84% share of total exports.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +153.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

China (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total imports in 2021.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugar cane imports, with a CAGR of +8.9% from 2012 to 2021. China (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugar cane into Cuba.
