After five years of growth, the Cuban toothpaste market decreased by -16.7% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a significant increase. Toothpaste consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

For the fifth consecutive year, Cuba recorded decline in overseas shipments of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, which decreased by 0% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toothpaste exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 54%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The Dominican Republic (X tons) was the main destination for toothpaste exports from Cuba, with a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, toothpaste exports to the Dominican Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Moldova (X kg), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Dominican Republic stood at +49.1%.

In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices exports from Cuba, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Dominican Republic stood at +49.8%.

In 2021, the average toothpaste export price amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 123%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+86.6%).

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, when their volume decreased by -15.5% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 484% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, toothpaste imports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 477%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the main supplier of toothpaste to Cuba, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, toothpaste imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Panama (X tons), more than tenfold. Ecuador (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil stood at +58.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Panama (+35.3% per year) and Ecuador (+99.6% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices to Cuba, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Panama ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil amounted to +53.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Panama (+43.9% per year) and Mexico (+15.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average toothpaste import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 23%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+24.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
