The Cuban whole fresh milk market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a perceptible slump. Whole fresh milk consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of whole fresh milk increased by 94% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 276%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 259% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest whole fresh milk supplier to Cuba, with a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, whole fresh milk imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), fourfold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain totaled +40.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+21.3% per year) and Poland (+424.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest whole fresh milk suppliers to Cuba were Poland ($X), Spain ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 95% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +462.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average whole fresh milk import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
