Buckwheat Market Size in the Czech Republic

The Czech buckwheat market stood at $X in 2022, increasing by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 56%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, buckwheat exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 105%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for buckwheat exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, buckwheat exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France amounted to +66.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+27.3% per year) and Poland (+16.2% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for buckwheat exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovenia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France totaled +69.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+30.6% per year) and Slovenia (+0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average buckwheat export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -13.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 41% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2022, supplies from abroad of buckwheat decreased by -15.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, buckwheat imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 151% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main suppliers of buckwheat imports to the Czech Republic, with a combined 77% share of total imports. Slovakia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Hungary and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +210.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Poland ($X) and Russia ($X) were the largest buckwheat suppliers to the Czech Republic, together comprising 81% of total imports. Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Hungary and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +271.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average buckwheat import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 60% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
