From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for caustic soda exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, caustic soda exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), twofold. Lithuania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany amounted to -13.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-0.1% per year) and Lithuania (+58.2% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for caustic soda exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled -9.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+2.7% per year) and Spain (+13.9% per year).

In 2021, the average caustic soda export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of caustic soda decreased by -2.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -2.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, caustic soda imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 72%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of caustic soda imports to the Czech Republic, together comprising 86% of total imports. Slovakia, Romania and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +55.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
