From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composite paperboard exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for composite paperboard exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, composite paperboard exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Austria (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at -6.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+5.2% per year) and Austria (+49.0% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for composite paper and paperboard exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 17% share.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of composite paper and paperboard was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 14%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +99.5% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest composite paperboard supplier to the Czech Republic, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, composite paperboard imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands totaled +7.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-0.5% per year) and Italy (+8.8% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of composite paper and paperboard to the Czech Republic, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands stood at +10.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+6.1% per year) and Spain (+9.1% per year).

In 2021, the average composite paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 30% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
