For the third consecutive year, the Czech leather footwear market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -23.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of leather footwear were exported from the Czech Republic; increasing by 3% against 2020. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 30%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, leather footwear exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of leather footwear exports from the Czech Republic, together accounting for 53% of total exports. Slovakia, Spain, Italy, Hungary, France, Romania, the UK, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +52.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for leather footwear exported from the Czech Republic worldwide, with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Spain, Italy, France, Hungary, Romania, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 35%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +44.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average leather footwear export price stood at $X per kg in 2021, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The export price peaked at $X per kg in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2021, purchases abroad of leather footwear decreased by -0.3% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports recorded a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 25%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leather footwear imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 14%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of leather footwear imports to the Czech Republic, together comprising 54% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Slovakia, France, India, Hungary, Vietnam and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +61.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest leather footwear suppliers to the Czech Republic, together accounting for 50% of total imports. These countries were followed by Austria, the Netherlands, China, Belgium, Slovakia, France, Hungary, India, Vietnam and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 40%.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +63.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average leather footwear import price stood at $X per kg in 2021, picking up by 9.3% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, leather footwear import price increased by +65.6% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per kg), while the price for China ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
