Exports from the Czech Republic

In 2022, shipments abroad of garlic increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 43%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for garlic exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 95% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovakia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-11.4% per year) and Spain (-29.5% per year).

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for garlic exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 3.2% share of total exports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 50%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2022, supplies from abroad of garlic increased by 5% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to the Czech Republic, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, garlic imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), more than tenfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain totaled +4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+6.7% per year) and China (-16.5% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to the Czech Republic, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by El Salvador ($X), with a 4.9% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain totaled +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: El Salvador (+105.3% per year) and China (-15.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average garlic import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -25.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 47%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
