For the third year in a row, the Czech gypsum and anhydrite market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 37% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +114.2% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from the Czech Republic

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of gypsum and anhydrite, when their volume decreased by -16.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 92%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 487% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for gypsum and anhydrite exports from the Czech Republic, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, gypsum and anhydrite exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovakia stood at +3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+179.2% per year) and Germany (+72.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for gypsum and anhydrite exported from the Czech Republic were Slovakia ($X), Germany ($X) and Hungary ($X), together accounting for 91% of total exports. These countries were followed by Romania, the Netherlands, Greece and Poland, which together accounted for a further 9%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Greece, with a CAGR of +300.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average gypsum and anhydrite export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 289% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+256.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of gypsum and anhydrite increased by 71% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +94.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of gypsum and anhydrite to the Czech Republic, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, gypsum and anhydrite imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +9.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+74.6% per year) and Austria (+190.5% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of gypsum and anhydrite to the Czech Republic, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany totaled +6.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+60.5% per year) and Austria (+96.8% per year).

In 2021, the average gypsum and anhydrite import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -28.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
