In 2021, the Czech preserved herring market decreased by -7.4% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. Overall, the total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +94.7% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Preserved herring production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports from the Czech Republic
In 2021, approx. X tons of herrings (prepared or preserved) were exported from the Czech Republic; waning by -20% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved herring exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved herring exports from the Czech Republic, together comprising 85% of total exports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Hungary and Germany, which together accounted for a further 12%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Croatia (with a CAGR of +45.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for herrings (prepared or preserved) exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovakia amounted to +2.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-2.8% per year) and Switzerland (+4.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved herring export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Slovakia ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Preserved Herring Imports
Imports into the Czech Republic
In 2021, overseas purchases of herrings (prepared or preserved) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved herring imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest preserved herring supplier to the Czech Republic, accounting for a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved herring imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. Denmark (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 19% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland stood at -3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-3.6% per year) and Denmark (+13.7% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of herrings (prepared or preserved) to the Czech Republic, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland stood at -4.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-6.1% per year) and Denmark (+9.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved herring import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 7.8%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while the price for Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
