In 2022, shipments abroad of horse, mule and donkey meat decreased by -32.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 378% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 307%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for horse, mule and donkey meat exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria (X kg), with a 1.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovakia amounted to -8.8%.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for horse, mule and donkey meat exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 3.1% share of total exports.

Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Uruguay (X tons) constituted the largest horse, mule and donkey meat supplier to the Czech Republic, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, horse, mule and donkey meat imports from Uruguay exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with a 20% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Uruguay stood at +52.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-2.8% per year) and Bulgaria (-2.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest horse, mule and donkey meat suppliers to the Czech Republic were Uruguay ($X), Argentina ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), together comprising 73% of total imports.

Uruguay, with a CAGR of +44.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average import price for horse, mule and donkey meat amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year.
