Lignite Market Size in the Czech Republic
The Czech lignite market stood at $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a slight downturn. In value terms, lignite exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main destinations of lignite exports from the Czech Republic, with a combined 83% share of total exports. Germany, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +76.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for lignite exported from the Czech Republic were Poland ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 86% share of total exports. Germany, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a CAGR of +73.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lignite export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic
In 2022, supplies from abroad of lignites increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lignite imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) was the main supplier of lignite to the Czech Republic, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovakia (X tons), with a 1.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled -5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+8.4% per year) and Poland (-28.7% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lignites to the Czech Republic, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 1.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany totaled +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+7.7% per year) and Poland (-18.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average lignite import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 4.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+14.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
