Luggage Market Size in the Czech Republic

The Czech luggage market fell sharply to $X in 2021, waning by -15.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of luggage and handbags were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, luggage exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for luggage exports from the Czech Republic, with a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, luggage exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), threefold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at -7.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+22.3% per year) and Slovakia (-10.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for luggage exported from the Czech Republic were Germany ($X), China ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined 53% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +27.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average luggage export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 29%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2021, purchases abroad of luggage and handbags decreased by -1% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, luggage imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of luggage imports to the Czech Republic, together comprising 62% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +40.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, luggage import price increased by +42.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 20% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
