Maize Market Size in the Czech Republic

The Czech maize market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a mild decline. Maize consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Maize Production in the Czech Republic

In value terms, maize production expanded remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 98%. Maize production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of maize in the Czech Republic shrank slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize yield increased by +60.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 77%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the average maize yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of maize were harvested in the Czech Republic; declining by -7.4% on 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to maize production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from the Czech Republic

In 2022, overseas shipments of maize decreased by -10.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from the Czech Republic, together comprising 96% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for maize exported from the Czech Republic were Austria ($X), Germany ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize export price increased by +35.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Poland ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Maize Imports

Imports into the Czech Republic

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of maize increased by 15% to X tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 58%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest maize supplier to the Czech Republic, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), threefold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland amounted to +2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (-2.9% per year) and Ukraine (+482.1% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X), Slovakia ($X) and France ($X) were the largest maize suppliers to the Czech Republic, together accounting for 64% of total imports. Hungary, Ukraine, Austria, Romania and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Among the main suppliers, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +425.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
