Exports from the Czech Republic
In 2021, molluscs exports from the Czech Republic contracted remarkably to X tons, with a decrease of -18.8% on the year before. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +23.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.
In value terms, molluscs exports declined modestly to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +28.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of molluscs exports from the Czech Republic, with a combined 64% share of total exports. Hungary, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +357.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovakia amounted to +3.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+13.1% per year) and Germany (+15.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average molluscs export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, molluscs export price increased by +67.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+52.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic
In 2021, approx. X tons of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) were imported into the Czech Republic; surging by 5.5% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -15.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -17.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 26%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest molluscs supplier to the Czech Republic, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, molluscs imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +28.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+54.5% per year) and Italy (+7.2% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) to the Czech Republic, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain amounted to +29.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+47.9% per year) and Italy (+5.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average molluscs import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
