In 2021, the Czech motor vehicle engine market decreased by -28.8% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) decreased by -6.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 40%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main destinations of motor vehicle engine exports from the Czech Republic, together comprising 65% of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Germany, India, Mexico and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +63.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 21%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2021, supplies from abroad of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) decreased by -16.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 27%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -32.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of motor vehicle engine imports to the Czech Republic, together accounting for 84% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, China and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +88.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
