Newsprint Market Size in the Czech Republic

In 2022, the Czech newsprint market increased by 38% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. Ukraine (X tons) was the main destination for newsprint exports from the Czech Republic, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, newsprint exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sweden (X tons), more than tenfold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ukraine was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+8.2% per year) and Slovakia (+11.5% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for newsprint exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Ukraine was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+32.1% per year) and Slovakia (+9.8% per year).

The average newsprint export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -65.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, newsprint imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Austria (X tons) constituted the largest newsprint supplier to the Czech Republic, accounting for a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, newsprint imports from Austria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sweden (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Austria totaled +9.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (-4.6% per year) and Germany (-12.0% per year).

Overall, import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Germany ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Finland ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
