The Czech nitrates market contracted modestly to $X in 2021, waning by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a remarkable increase. Nitrates consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nitrates exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for nitrates exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, nitrates exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovakia (X tons), with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Austria stood at +18.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-24.9% per year) and Slovakia (-13.8% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for nitrates (excluding those of potassium) exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria amounted to +23.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-9.3% per year) and Germany (-18.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average nitrates export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 52%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+28.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of nitrates (excluding those of potassium), when their volume increased by 25% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 58%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nitrates imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 89%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest nitrates supplier to the Czech Republic, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, nitrates imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Hungary (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland totaled +3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (+22.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-0.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest nitrates suppliers to the Czech Republic were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. Belgium, Italy, Hungary, Denmark, the Netherlands, China and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +69.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average nitrates import price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 66%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
