Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot exports soared to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for onion and shallot exports from the Czech Republic, with a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, onion and shallot exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Austria (X tons), with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovakia totaled -4.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-7.5% per year) and Austria (-0.1% per year).

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for onions and shallots exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 2.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 1.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovakia totaled +3.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-4.7% per year) and Austria (+2.5% per year).

The average onion and shallot export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -14.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a strong increase. In 2022, overseas purchases of onions and shallots increased by 6.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +7.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main suppliers of onion and shallot imports to the Czech Republic, together comprising 80% of total imports. Austria, Poland, Italy, France and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
