Crude Oil Market Size in the Czech Republic
In 2022, the Czech crude oil market increased by 27% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Crude oil consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from the Czech Republic
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of crude petroleum oil increased by 46% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a sharp reduction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, crude oil exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for crude oil exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, crude oil exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X kg), sixfold. Slovakia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Moldova stood at +2,075.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-35.1% per year) and Slovakia (-16.1% per year).
In value terms, Moldova ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for crude oil exported from the Czech Republic worldwide, together accounting for 99% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Moldova, with a CAGR of +459.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
The average crude oil export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -12.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 411% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+38.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Crude Oil Imports
Imports into the Czech Republic
In 2022, imports of crude petroleum oil into the Czech Republic rose rapidly to X tons, surging by 15% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, crude oil imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest crude oil supplier to the Czech Republic, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, crude oil imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Azerbaijan (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kazakhstan (X tons), with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Azerbaijan (-0.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+2.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest crude oil suppliers to the Czech Republic were Russia ($X), Azerbaijan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), with a combined 86% share of total imports. The United States, Saudi Arabia and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +240.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average crude oil import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+16.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
