In 2021, the Czech plastic container market increased by 21% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed pronounced growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Exports from the Czech Republic

In 2021, plastic container exports from the Czech Republic rose rapidly to X tons, surging by 7.2% compared with 2020. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 23%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic container exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +71.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for plastic container exports from the Czech Republic, with a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic container exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), fourfold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +7.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-0.5% per year) and Austria (-0.8% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for plastic containers exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to +9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+1.6% per year) and Austria (+3.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average plastic container export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2021, overseas purchases of plastic containers were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 79%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic container imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +30.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 59%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic container imports to the Czech Republic, together accounting for 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Hungary, Italy, France, Slovakia, Denmark, China, the Netherlands, Turkey and Austria, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +36.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic container suppliers to the Czech Republic were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 55% of total imports. Spain, France, Slovakia, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Hungary, China, Austria and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +30.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average plastic container import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
