In 2022, supplies from abroad of poppy seed increased by 39% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, poppy seed imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 57%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest poppy seed supplier to the Czech Republic, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, poppy seed imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Estonia (X tons), with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +37.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+4.4% per year) and Estonia (0.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of poppy seed to the Czech Republic, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Estonia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +38.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+7.8% per year) and Estonia (0.0% per year).

In 2022, the average poppy seed import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -13.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 77%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+135.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
