Pumpkin Market Size in the Czech Republic

In 2022, the Czech pumpkin market decreased by -17.7% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. Pumpkin consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In 2022, approx. X tons of pumpkin (squash and gourds) were exported from the Czech Republic; reducing by -3.6% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pumpkin exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for pumpkin exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, pumpkin exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovakia stood at +13.5%.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for pumpkin (squash and gourds) exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovakia stood at +14.7%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pumpkin export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin export price decreased by -3.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 74%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+7.0%).

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2022, overseas purchases of pumpkin (squash and gourds) decreased by -25.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 43%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, pumpkin imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pumpkin to the Czech Republic, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, pumpkin imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain totaled +13.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+20.8% per year) and Italy (+6.5% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pumpkin (squash and gourds) to the Czech Republic, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain amounted to +16.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+9.4% per year) and Poland (+27.4% per year).
