Coniferous Roundwood Market Size in the Czech Republic

In 2022, shipments abroad of roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -21.9% to X cubic meters, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X cubic meters in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Austria (X cubic meters) was the main destination for coniferous roundwood exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, coniferous roundwood exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X cubic meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X cubic meters), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria stood at +7.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+3.0% per year) and Poland (+65.2% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for roundwood (coniferous) exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Austria amounted to +6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+2.4% per year) and Poland (+60.8% per year).

In 2022, the average coniferous roundwood export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of roundwood (coniferous), when their volume increased by 60% to X cubic meters. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters) and Slovakia (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of coniferous roundwood imports to the Czech Republic, with a combined 91% share of total imports. Sweden and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 3.3%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +97.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
