Salt Market Size in the Czech Republic
The Czech salt market rose rapidly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +74.7% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Salt Exports
Exports from the Czech Republic
In 2022, overseas shipments of salt and pure sodium chloride increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 174% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, salt exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +33.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for salt exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, salt exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), fourfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovakia stood at -3.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-1.3% per year) and Germany (+23.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for salt exported from the Czech Republic were Germany ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 56% of total exports. Austria, Ukraine and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.4%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, South Africa, with a CAGR of +35.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average salt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 121%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Czech Republic
In 2022, imports of salt and pure sodium chloride into the Czech Republic expanded significantly to X tons, growing by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, salt imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +74.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 59%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest salt supplier to the Czech Republic, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, salt imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), fourfold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany totaled +3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-5.4% per year) and Austria (-0.2% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of salt and pure sodium chloride to the Czech Republic, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany stood at +6.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-2.2% per year) and Austria (+2.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average salt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, salt import price increased by +44.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
