In 2022, the Czech sugary soft drink market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable descent. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of sugary soft drinks increased by 0.4% to X litres, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sugary soft drink exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Slovakia (X litres) was the main destination for sugary soft drink exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, sugary soft drink exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X litres), fivefold. Poland (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovakia stood at +3.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+18.4% per year) and Poland (-10.9% per year).

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for sugary soft drinks exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovakia stood at +3.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-4.7% per year) and Hungary (+17.1% per year).

In 2022, the average sugary soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, which is down by -4.1% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sugary soft drink export price decreased by -7.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13%. In 2022, overseas purchases of sugary soft drinks increased by 17% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports soared to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of sugary soft drink to the Czech Republic, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, sugary soft drink imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hungary (X litres), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland totaled +18.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (-9.4% per year) and Hungary (+16.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest sugary soft drink suppliers to the Czech Republic were Poland ($X), Austria ($X) and Hungary ($X), together accounting for 59% of total imports. Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Among the main suppliers, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +70.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average sugary soft drink import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per litre), while the price for Slovakia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
