Tomato Market Size in the Czech Republic

The Czech tomato market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Tomato Production in the Czech Republic

In value terms, tomato production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 173% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average yield of tomatoes in the Czech Republic contracted significantly to X tons per ha, which is down by -16.1% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 98% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average tomato yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of tomatoes were harvested in the Czech Republic; stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The tomato harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from the Czech Republic

In 2022, shipments abroad of tomatoes increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for tomato exports from the Czech Republic, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), fourfold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovakia totaled -6.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+22.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+20.2% per year).

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the key foreign market for tomatoes exports from the Czech Republic, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovakia stood at -4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+21.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+24.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tomato export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+21.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tomato Imports

Imports into the Czech Republic

Tomato imports into the Czech Republic dropped slightly to X tons in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 6.3%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Morocco (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of tomato imports to the Czech Republic, together comprising 72% of total imports. Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Turkey, Belgium, Italy, France and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +35.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Spain ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the largest tomato suppliers to the Czech Republic, together comprising 76% of total imports. Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Turkey, Italy, Belgium, France and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +29.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 24%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
