In 2022, overseas shipments of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers decreased by -0.8% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -6.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers stood at $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Sweden (X units) was the main destination for exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Denmark, with a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X units), threefold. Morocco (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sweden amounted to +18.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+7.5% per year) and Morocco (+35.3% per year).

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers exports from Denmark, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sweden totaled +16.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+8.8% per year) and Morocco (+31.4% per year).

The average export price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 10% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Sweden (X units) constituted the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container supplier to Denmark, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Sweden exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X units), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Sweden totaled +12.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+3.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+25.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container suppliers to Denmark were Sweden ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports. France, Belgium, China, Germany and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Finland, with a CAGR of +70.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Finland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
