After three years of growth, the Danish hairpin market decreased by -31.6% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, saw temperate growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

In 2021, approx. X tons of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers were exported from Denmark; with an increase of 31% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hairpin exports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 53% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sweden (X tons), Norway (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of hairpin exports from Denmark, with a combined 69% share of total exports. Finland, France, the Netherlands and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in France (with a CAGR of +25.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Norway ($X), Sweden ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for hairpin exported from Denmark worldwide, with a combined 57% share of total exports. Finland, France, the Netherlands and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +20.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average hairpin export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -23.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+19.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hairpin Imports

Imports into Denmark

In 2021, approx. X tons of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers were imported into Denmark; dropping by -15% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 87%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, hairpin imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 84%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hairpin to Denmark, with a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, hairpin imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lithuania (X tons), threefold. Sweden (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+152.2% per year) and Sweden (+7.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hairpin to Denmark, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+147.4% per year) and Sweden (-1.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average hairpin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -8.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the price for Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+38.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
