Industrial Roundwood Market Size in Denmark

In 2022, the Danish industrial roundwood market decreased by -2.7% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X cubic meters) was the main destination for industrial roundwood exports from Denmark, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, industrial roundwood exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X cubic meters), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Sweden (X cubic meters), with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +18.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-14.7% per year) and Sweden (-15.4% per year).

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of industrial roundwood, when their volume decreased by -0.1% to X cubic meters. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, industrial roundwood imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +13.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In 2022, Sweden (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of industrial roundwood to Denmark, with a 36% share of total imports. Moreover, industrial roundwood imports from Sweden exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X cubic meters), twofold. Norway (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Sweden totaled +8.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.5% per year) and Norway (+93.6% per year).

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constituted the largest supplier of industrial roundwood to Denmark, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Latvia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Sweden totaled +4.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-1.9% per year) and Latvia (+16.6% per year).

Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Estonia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
