In 2022, the Danish primary cell and battery market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, the total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -22.0% against 2019 indices. Primary cell and battery consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, primary cell and battery production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 210%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of primary cells and batteries decreased by -26.1% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 45%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

The Czech Republic (X units), Norway (X units) and Finland (X units) were the main destinations of primary cell and battery exports from Denmark, together comprising 32% of total exports. Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, India, France, Iceland, Greenland, Australia and Faroe Islands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +28.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Norway ($X) and Poland ($X) were the largest markets for primary cell and battery exported from Denmark worldwide, together accounting for 36% of total exports. The Netherlands, Sweden, France, Finland, Australia, Iceland, India, the Czech Republic, Greenland and Faroe Islands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, India, with a CAGR of +24.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average primary cell and battery export price amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 83%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+33.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of primary cells and batteries decreased by -4.7% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -28.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 37%. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. China (X units), Sweden (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main suppliers of primary cell and battery imports to Denmark, with a combined 75% share of total imports. Belgium, Poland, the Czech Republic, the UK and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +83.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and Sweden ($X) were the largest primary cell and battery suppliers to Denmark, together accounting for 55% of total imports. The Czech Republic, Belgium, Poland, the Netherlands and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

In 2022, the average primary cell and battery import price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 24%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while the price for Sweden ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
