Sunflower Seed Market Size in Denmark

For the third year in a row, the Danish sunflower seed market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 7.3% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. Sunflower seed consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2022, overseas shipments of sunflower seed increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower seed exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sweden (X tons) was the main destination for sunflower seed exports from Denmark, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, sunflower seed exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), more than tenfold. Norway (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sweden amounted to -1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+20.1% per year) and Norway (-13.6% per year).

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for sunflower seed exports from Denmark, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 9% share of total exports. It was followed by Norway, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Sweden amounted to -1.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+23.8% per year) and Norway (-19.4% per year).

The average sunflower seed export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sunflower seed imports into Denmark fell slightly to X tons in 2022, leveling off at 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower seed imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Bulgaria (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower seed to Denmark, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, sunflower seed imports from Bulgaria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Bulgaria stood at +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (-3.0% per year) and Germany (-13.2% per year).

In value terms, Bulgaria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower seed to Denmark, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Bulgaria stood at +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-11.2% per year) and Slovakia (-1.5% per year).

In 2022, the average sunflower seed import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
