Banana Market Size in the Dominican Republic

The UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of banana exports from the Dominican Republic, with a combined 71% share of total exports. Sweden, Austria, Trinidad and Tobago, Portugal, Ireland, Haiti, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +59.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, banana export price increased by +9.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Trinidad and Tobago ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the Dominican Republic

In 2022, the amount of bananas imported into the Dominican Republic skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 41% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 122%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, banana imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 135%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, India (X tons) was the main banana supplier to the Dominican Republic, with a approx. 99% share of total imports.
