Canned Food Market Size in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican canned food market shrank to $X in 2021, declining by -3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -14.4% against 2018 indices. In general, the total production indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +2.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 60%. Canned food production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from the Dominican Republic

In 2021, shipments abroad of canned food increased by 7.5% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, canned food exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild curtailment. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), Haiti (X tons) and Jamaica (X tons) were the main destinations of canned food exports from the Dominican Republic, together comprising 72% of total exports. Trinidad and Tobago and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.2%.

From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Haiti ($X) and Jamaica ($X) constituted the largest markets for canned food exported from the Dominican Republic worldwide, together accounting for 85% of total exports. These countries were followed by Trinidad and Tobago and Spain, which together accounted for a further 9.7%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +11.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average canned food export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 4.6%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Jamaica ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Haiti ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the Dominican Republic

Canned food imports into the Dominican Republic fell slightly to X tons in 2021, which is down by -4% on 2020. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -10.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned food imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest canned food supplier to the Dominican Republic, with a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, canned food imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Costa Rica (X tons), with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +21.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+6.4% per year) and Costa Rica (+19.1% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X), Mexico ($X) and Denmark ($X) were the largest canned food suppliers to the Dominican Republic, together comprising 61% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Costa Rica, China, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy and Colombia, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the average canned food import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -16.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
