In 2021, the Dominican toy market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption enjoyed strong growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Toy exports from the Dominican Republic expanded rapidly to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 7.7% on the year before. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 151%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toy exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 122% against the previous year. Haiti (X tons) was the main destination for toy exports from the Dominican Republic, with a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, toy exports to Haiti exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Cuba (X tons), with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Haiti totaled +30.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-15.8% per year) and Cuba (+35.2% per year).

In value terms, Haiti ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for dolls and toys exports from the Dominican Republic, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Cuba, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Haiti stood at +17.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-19.0% per year) and Cuba (+51.1% per year).

The average toy export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -15.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Dominican Republic

Toy imports into the Dominican Republic reduced notably to X tons in 2021, declining by -72.1% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 825% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, toy imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -12.6% against 2019 indices. In 2021, China (X tons) was the main toy supplier to the Dominican Republic, accounting for a 125% share of total imports. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
