Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Jamaica (X tons) was the main destination for envelope exports from the Dominican Republic, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, envelope exports to Jamaica exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Trinidad and Tobago (X tons), fourfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Jamaica totaled +163.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (-40.5% per year) and the United States (+1.0% per year).
In value terms, Jamaica ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for envelopes exports from the Dominican Republic, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Trinidad and Tobago ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Jamaica stood at +102.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (-37.8% per year) and the United States (+3.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average envelope export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -56.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 153% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Trinidad and Tobago ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Trinidad and Tobago (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Envelope Imports
Imports into the Dominican Republic
In 2021, purchases abroad of envelopes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 51%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, envelope imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Costa Rica (X tons), the United States (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) were the main suppliers of envelope imports to the Dominican Republic, together accounting for 86% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for El Salvador (with a CAGR of +51.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest envelope suppliers to the Dominican Republic were the United States ($X), Costa Rica ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 82% of total imports. These countries were followed by El Salvador and the UK, which together accounted for a further 14%.
El Salvador, with a CAGR of +58.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average envelope import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 40%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Costa Rica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+46.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
