Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 264% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, non-corrugated paper box exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 146%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Jamaica (X tons), Haiti (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of non-corrugated paper box exports from the Dominican Republic, with a combined 90% share of total exports. Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Trinidad and Tobago (with a CAGR of +39.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Jamaica ($X), Haiti ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest markets for non-corrugated paper box exported from the Dominican Republic worldwide, together comprising 89% of total exports. In 2022, purchases abroad of folding cartons, boxes and cases of non-corrugated paper or paperboard increased by 0.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 90% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-corrugated paper box imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X tons), China (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-corrugated paper box imports to the Dominican Republic, together accounting for 72% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +196.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
