The United States (X tons) was the main destination for leather footwear exports from the Dominican Republic, accounting for a 82% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 2.4% share of total exports. Portugal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to -10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-24.8% per year) and Portugal (+26.1% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for leather footwear exports from the Dominican Republic, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 3% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 1.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States amounted to -6.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-21.0% per year) and Germany (-1.5% per year).

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 101% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, leather footwear imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest leather footwear supplier to the Dominican Republic, with a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, leather footwear imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), more than tenfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.7% share.
